I found this beautiful specimen during a lunch time walk - you never know what you will find on the side of a back woods road. This snake was beautiful, I feel lucky to have taken such a wonderful picture. Gartersnake's along with many other species are all over my yard. Although I have gotten many quick glimpses, I don't think I have ever been able to see one so up close. Since they are often under a tangle of weeds and grass and can get away quickly and mostly undetected.
Seeing this snake brought back a memory from a field trip when I was little. We visited a nature center and one of the highlights of the day was being able to touch a snake. It's skin was beautiful and soft.
Maybe my next walk will yield the elusive and believed to be extinct Vermont Catamount. Or better yet, a Sasquatch! You never know.
