I used one skein of Patons Classic Wool, worsted weight, approximately 210 yards. It took, just about, the entire skein because I used a puffy stitch. If I made this hat just using a single crochet stitch it would have been just over half.
My favorite part of this hat is the band. There is a amazing stitch, that I love, and found in the Vogue Knitting Stitchionary 4 - Crochet Edition. It is a crochet rib that very closely mimics the look of knitting. I have even fooled people with it before. This is the only book I have ever come across this stitch. Even with all of my google searches, I have only once, found someone with directions for this. I am not sure why more people don't know about it!
The other stitch I used, well I guess it is like a variation of a popcorn and a granny stitch using double crochet... If there is a real name for it, I have no clue what it is. This stitch has a nice density and pairs well with the weight of the band and makes a nice honey comb pattern.
Everyone should find a trashy movie, curl up on the couch this weekend and crochet a warm winter hat, learn some new stitches or a new skill. It's great therapy and good fun :)
Keep your brains warm... Adios!
